RYA Short Range Certificate VHF-DSC.

Option 1. RYA SRC Marine VHF - DSC online interactive course costs
£60 including manual + £60 (2019 rate) RYA Marine VHF -DSC license fee.
This is currently supported on PC's running Vista SP2 or later/MAC OS10.5 or later, with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, and a microphone & speakers/headphones. You can download a trial course before taking the course.

Option 2. RYA SRC Marine VHF - DSC classroom course costs
£100 including manual + £60 (2019 rate) RYA Marine VHF -DSC license fee.
Classroom based course, increase in length to 10 hours with the option of upto 3 hours home study.

Due to the recent course changes, it is no longer possible to take a direct exam unless you have one of the following:

  • Hold a Restricted Marine VHF license (old style upgrade) and have copy of it.
  • Have atttended a RYA classroom based course and have the exam application form signed by the instructor.
  • Have completed the RYA Interactive course and have the completion certificate.
During the examination you will be given a practical assessment will be given on programming all aspects of DSC radios AND the RYA SRC exam consisting of written and multiple choice questions.

In order to operate a marine VHF-DSC radio, part of the Global Maritme Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) the new Short Range Certificate is a legal requirement. It is also usually a requirement if you are planning to charter a vessel. VHF - Digital Select Calling is a facility that automates many of the procedures traditionally carried out on channel 16. This one day/two evening RYA Marine VHF course assumes no prior knowledge, and covers all the theory required combined with practical experience on our training radios.

All marine leisure users should consider a Marine VHF radio course as an important safety benefit as mobile phone signals can be unreliable.

There is an additional £60 (2019 rate) RYA license fee per person payable to the RYA. Please allow time for the license application to be processed. For an additional fee the RYA offer a Fast Track process. If you require the license within two weeks of finishing the course, please contact us beforehand.
Timuna Sea is a RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Shorebased Centre offering the VHF - DSC Short Range Radio course. DSC - Digital Select Calling is part of the new GMDSS - Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. Based in the London Docklands in West India Quay, Canary Wharf, London, E14 we are just a short distance from the City by either the Jubilee Line to Canary Wharf, or the DLR - Docklands Light Railway to West India Quay or Westferry. We can offer evening or weekend courses. This qualification is ideal for BSAC clubs with their own RIB's or small boats, Diver Coxswains, BCU clubs (kayak & canoe) in coastal/tidal waters, safety boats, jet skis and windsurfers. Any vessels (eg. Dutch barges, Narrow boats, yatchs, motor boats) on the River Thames over 13.7metre (45 feet) are now required to maintain a VHF watch. If you are planning on chartering a yacht it is often a requirement that you hold a Marine VHF radio license.

RYA VHF SRC - exam only
If you have an existing restricted VHF license (or have taken the RYA SRC online or classroom course with another RYA Centre) it is possible to sit the exam directly.

You will be given a practical test on programming all aspects of DSC radios AND the RYA SRC exam consisting of written and multiple choice questions.

We use Icom M421 or Icom M505 radios. You can download the instructions and prepare beforehand.

There have been recent changes to the Mayday transmission - both the MMSI and Call Sign should be in both the Call and Message.

You will be given a short time to familiarise yourself with the radio of your choice prior to the practical assessment. The £60 license fee is payable to the RYA, and is per attempt. If you fail either part, you will need to resit the both parts, a further fee to the RYA will be payable.

Generally the RYA SRC VHF exams can be conducted on Tuesday evenings, or Mon-Weds afternoons. Other days may be possible , contact us for availability.

You will need either the A5 folded to A6 printed paper application form, or the current "Report Card" Sticker (from 2017 onwards) not the A4 pdf application form. If you do not have these, ask your original RYA Training Centre, as they will have retained it. Don't forget a passort style photo for postal application. A digital photo is acceptable for Fast Track applications.
